Online Leadership Program Associate
Global Kids, Inc., a New York City based non-profit organization
dedicated to transforming urban youth into successful students and
global and community leaders, is seeking to fill a staff position as
Online Leadership Program Associate. The position is in person, in
New York City, and would primarily entail the co-development of two
programs based in and around the virtual world of Teen Second Life.
The Online Leadership Program Associate will join GK's Online
Leadership Program (OLP) in New York City to develop and run
workshops for teens both in person and in the virtual world of Teen
Second Life (TSL). The OLP works with young people to develop
web-based dialogues and socially-conscious games that inspire youth
worldwide to learn and take action about global and public affairs.
GK's work in TSL is on the cutting-edge of developing best practices
in applying global youth development practices in virtual worlds.
Now in its seventh year, the OLP is expanding its role within the TSL
virtual world. In the past year GK has run an essay contest and a
summer camp in TSL. The summer camp, for example, educated the teens
about important global issues, led them to pick one about which they
could learn more (child sex trafficking), and supported them to
develop an educational interactive experience to inspired their peers
to take action. The Online Leadership Program Associate will adapt
existing experiential, interactive workshops for use in the virtual
world, co-facilitate the workshops for online teens, assist the youth
to develop an action plan, document best practices, manage Global
Kids islands, and more. Global Kids will be launching three different
projects involved with Second Life - one around games, one around
machinima, and one around leadership development - and the new OLP
Associate will be involved with all three.
The ideal candidate is tech-savvy, resourceful, creative, and a
team-player who possess the following capabilities and experiences:
o College degree with experience in youth development.
o A passion for working with digital media as a vehicle for education.
o Experience developing curriculum and interactive workshops.
o Experience working with low-income youth of color and online youth.
o Ability to self-teach the skills required to use the virtual
world of Second Life.
In addition, we prefer a candidate with:
o Familiarity with foreign policy issues.
o Experience developing and running online projects.
o The ability to take initiative.
o Strong communication, writing, organizational, and computer skills.
o A short learning curve around new digital and Internet tools
and applications.
o Proficiency with Macintosh computers.
o Accessibility to downtown Manhattan.
o Ability to work within a fast-paced, distracting environment.
o A fast typer and an efficient mutitasker.
