If by aggregate you mean also genericize them so we don't get the prisoner's
dilemma problem, then I think that might really work. My interpretation is:

--Each dev/publisher gives download numbers, sales volume, and so on to a
trusted 3rd party

--3rd party reports not what each title did but gives averages and spreads:
10% of all games sold in this range; 10% in that range, and so on.

--Also they might report average differences due to distribution method,
genre, download size, or whatever else makes sense.


This makes me wonder, you'd think there would already be industry info
providers doing this, and perhaps compensating to those who give the info in
hopes of selling the results to us in the industry. I don't have a problem
paying a bit for the report; that's fair for a good study. Is this info
being sold already or has anyone been approached to supply it for an
upcoming study?


It's clearly in the best interest of everyone in the industry for the
generic info to come out. I can see why nobody wants their specific title to
be exposed but the above would avoid that.

Why does one need the distributors to create this list?  Doesn't every
developer/publisher get a royalty statement from each distributor indicating
how many games were sold over the preceding period?  The publishers can all
agree to contribute their stats to a neutral 3rd party which will aggregrate
and publish them.  The downside is that the stats will probably be a little
out of date due to the delay in royalty reporting, but you should be able to
track patterns pretty quickly.

b) Alienates our distribution partners.

A better path really is to work as a group to come up
with a solution that the distributors feel safeguards
their privacy in terms of the numbers.

One option would be to let the IGDA Casual Games
steering commitee be in charge of aggregating and
charting that information; most of them are veterans
from well-established retail partners, so the
trust-bonds should already be present.

Similar to how we have an Editor of the Casual Games
Quarterly, we could have an editor for the Casual
Games Saleschart Monthly. The commitee would then work
with the distributors to find some person that is
trusted enough to get the raw data, and have the excel
sheets delivered to him. As James said; it's really a
trust-issue, rather than a technology one.

How do we go about kicking this off?
