You might want to experiment with Google AdSense:

nothing else, it¹s an easy science experiment to understand the potential
for ads in your game (and at least Google ads are not too obnoxious...).

How are you planning to market the game?

Another approach is to separate art and commerce (aka church and state).
Approach your project as pure art. If the mechanic is compelling to a
mainstream audience, but perhaps the theme is too artsy, consider partnering
with someone who can help brand and tweak the game to resonate with Walmart
America. Ultimately that may not appeal to the artist in you, but if it
helps fund more art perhaps you can rationalize.

After all, most innovation comes from the heart.
