Even Gus Van Sant wouldn't go so far as to use the 'real' subject matter
and that guy is morally twisted ;)
The idea of 'playing out' a real high school massacre can't be healthy
on any level. Profiting from a real tragedy like this or furthering your
career from it ain't exactly the right way to go, either.
In terms of movies - after the big 'video nasty' phase of the 70s and
early 80s, there was a huge backlash from the board of classification in
censoring any kind of gore. Films like Friday the 13th ended up looking
pretty tame due to the overbearing censorship. I'm actually a fan of
fictional horror movies and I understand the whole idea of giving people
a particular experience, like scaring the pants off them, through
'tough' content. The keyword here is 'fictional'.
What I don't understand at all is why this guy is getting support for
his cause. He's made a sick, tasteless statement in the indie game world
and for some stupid reason people are trying to make out that slamdance
are somehow oppressing the dude or that they are some evil empire out to
destroy the fabric of independent gaming - he's the underdog? Call me
traditional, but I like to support causes that deserve ... not some
kid's idea of getting some publicity at the cost of other peoples
suffering.
I don't want to go on about this anymore, though. We've given the 'game'
more attention than it deserves already!
