I find it a very strange decision from Apple if this is true.

Why not create a new ecosystem of iPhone software buyers and developers?

With OSX, 320 x 480 color display, WiFi, and the Apple brand, Palm + Windows
Mobile + Symbian wouldn't stand a chance and developers would flock to the
system creating tons of interesting applications/games.

If iPhone becomes for smartphones as ipod has become for mp3 players, then I
think the software/games potential for the platform is extremely big.
