[casual_games] Google acquires Adscape

I am in the other camp - Google is the next evil corp ala MSFT ;-) It's
hard not to be evil and be a large company - too much of left hand not
knowing what right hand is doing.

As the person who built a pretty substantial ad-supported games business
at Zango (5m uniques a month when I left last year) - I am not the
biggest fan of in-game advertising in terms of its efficiency and
ability to deliver a ROI to an advertiser. The problem is that games
don't provide a good "matching" point for targeting ads (unless selling
other games). Either a tie-in to a behavioral engine aka Tacoda or
demographic based might provide value - the problem is those types of
targeting don't come close to matching contextual cpm's. I've tried in
game, interstitial and around the game and none is perfect.

That being said - I am very, very, very, very, very bullish on
ad-supported casual games. It just makes too much sense given the vast
majority of players on a title never intend to buy - might as well get
some value as a distributor/publisher/developer instead of giving away
our products for free.

This is great for the industry IMO. I wrote my Master's thesis on
in-game advertising (
http://etd.lsu.edu/docs/available/etd-11162006-101838/unrestricted/Lewis
_thesis.pdf if anyone's bored) so I like to keep up with this. Now the
question is, who's going to acquire Double Fusion?

Kudos for Adscape for getting it right, and kudos to Google for getting
into the in-game space. I admit I'm one of those people who believe
Google can do no wrong - aside from the whole allowing copyrighted
material on YouTube thing.
