Speaker: Kingsley Fletcher from MOD, DSTO
Abstract:
The human factors discipline of DSTO Maritime Operations Division
recently conducted a study which investigated the minimum acceptable
size of text and symbols when displayed on a high resolution (2560 x
1600 pixels) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) under both high and low
ambient lighting conditions. Existing standards address this issue, but
may have limited applicability as they appear either to be based on
research using either CRT displays (which can have different visual
characteristics than LCDs), lower resolution LCDs or only high ambient
lighting. The DSTO study initially examined the luminance and contrast
levels that produced optimal legibility of white, red, green and blue
letters, and then explored the accuracy and confidence with which
letters, numbers and combat symbology of various sizes were identified
when briefly displayed. The results of the study will be discussed and
compared to exiting standards.
