This year's theme is transportation, bringing focus to the design of user friendly forms of transport, transport systems, processes and infrastructure. UPA Sydney with the support of CHISIG is organising another great event for this year's World Usability Day and we ask the question "What would it take to get you out of your car?" Specifically, we are focusing on the issues and challenges that come to mind when using alternate forms of transportation in and around Sydney, and we're exploring how user-centred design can be applied to make these alternatives more attractive than relying on our vehicles. We know this is a very complex and challenging area, so we have asked the people and organisations already designing our transport future to share their experiences. We also want to hear from you and have a variety of ways you can get involved. We have planned a great day, with very interesting presentations, activities and exhibitions...so be sure to add it to your diary and join us on the day. The day will include: * Guest speakers / transportation experts * Interactive workshops & discussion questions * Photo and design exhibition highlighting transportation challenges and solutions Mark your calendar Cost: Free!!! Just come along - no registration required Who: Everyone is welcome (including students, usability professionals, people who work with or use transportation) When: Thursday, 13 November 2008, 9:00am - 5:00pm Where: University of Technology Sydney, Haymarket campus: Room 12, Level 1, Block B, Building 5 1 - 59 Quay Street, Haymarket. Contribute to the exhibition You are invited to contribute your ideas to a simple design and photo exhibition that will be on display at World Usability Day. The exhibit focuses on how we can improve the design of our current modes of transport, supporting systems and infrastructure. Our goal is to identify ways to better support the people who use transportation and be more sustainable in the future. We encourage you to submit examples to help us draw attention to the importance of usability in transportation. This is a great opportunity to share your ideas with others about what does and doesn't work, your thoughts about how to create more usable transportation for Sydney, and have a bit of fun in the process. Prizes will be awarded for the most innovative and interesting submissions. Click here to see attachment (or visit www.upasydney.org) for more information about how to submit an entry for the exhibition. Please note that the deadline for submissions is 5:00pm on Friday, 7 November 2008. Become a volunteer World Usability Day is a totally free event, organised by volunteers and friends of Sydney's chapter of the Usability Professionals' Association (UPA). World Usability Day is a great, fun way to connect with other professionals and people in the industry, and volunteering is a great way to give back to the community. We are looking for people to help out on the day and in the lead up to put the finishing touches to the event. If you are interested, email us at events at upasydney.org, and we'll get in touch. Join the Global Transport Challenge An initiative of the international arm of Usability Professionals' Association, the Global Transport Challenge is an easy way for you to understand how YOU USE transportation everyday and the impact it has on our environment. To be launched on World Usability Day 2008, you will be able to: * MEASURE your everyday transportation usage * MONITOR your personal carbon travel footprint and compare yourself to others around the world * MINIMISE your energy usage through alternative transportation choices, carbon offsets, and simple travel changes thereby maximising the impact on our world. To find out more about the Global Transport Challenge visit http://www.worldusabilityday.org/globaltransportchallenge. If you have questions about the Sydney World Usability Day event, please email events at upasydney.org. More specific details will continue to be added to our UPA Sydney website (www.upasydney.org) as the schedule is finalised. Hope to see you on World Usability Day! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... PRESENTER: Dr. Rod Farmer TITLE: Challenges Designing Mobile User Experiences VENUE: University of Melbourne, IDEA LAB, level 4, 111 Barry Street, Carlton DATE and TIME: Friday 14 Nov 2008, 3-4 pm ABSTRACT: The greatest challenge in developing valued mobile users experiences is the mobile industry itself. The lack of standardisation, proprietary innovations, and difficult partner relationships have led to massive fragmentation amongst the industry's biggest players - handset manufacturers, network operators, software platform providers and chipset suppliers. Despite advances made in better understanding end-user behaviour and needs, designers of mobile user experiences must continually assault an almost insurmountable climb of commercial compromises and technological perils. This presentation provides a cursory overview of several mobile design issues which limit about ability to ability to move beyond the lowest common denominator in our designs. One of our most recent projects required developing a system to track patients as they are treated in the RAH pre-anaesthetic clinic. What was originally suggested was not what they got! The final application uses WPF, ASP.NET as well as touch-screen technologies and RFID to solve the problem. This talk outlines how the project was presented, the problems that arose, the solutions we developed, and how the system is used. In particular, contemporary technologies -- including mobile devices and ambient displays -- can be imagined to provide opportunities for reflection on personal and collective action, or for monitoring and visualization of behaviour and its relationship to environmental change. These efforts exploit recent explorations of the use of computers as persuasive technologies in domains such as health and fitness. In this talk, I want to examine the limits of this work as currently construed. In particular, I want to argue that the framing of environmental consciousness in terms of personal moral choice has three problems. First, it commits to a form of ecological utopianism whose internal contradictions make it a questionable basis for practical action; second, it implicitly adopts a model of ecological market capitalism that may be as much a source of problem as one of solutions, and, third, it systematically closes off areas of inquiry that reach beyond individual morality and consumption. By drawing on research on ecological politics and the political economy of environmentalism, I'll suggest some new directions for the relationship between sustainability and HCI. PRESENTERS: Dr. Ed Kazmierczak & Ioanna Ioannou TITLE: Requirements of Touch-Enabled Virtual Reality Simulations for Oral Surgery VENUE: University of Melbourne, IDEA LAB, level 4, 111 Barry Street, Carlton DATE and TIME: Friday 28 Nov 2008, 3-4 pm ABSTRACT: The traditional internship model used in surgical training is resource intensive and inefficient. Virtual reality (VR) simulators offer an alternative training model, where trainees have the opportunity to gain competency in surgical tasks before operating on real patients. The central questions of our research are: "What characterises competence in oral surgery?" and "What are the requirements for a virtual reality simulator to contribute effectively to training outcomes"? One challenge in developing effective VR training simulators is that traditional requirements engineering approaches don't work, due to the fact that domain experts are not always able to articulate the subtle cognitive and psychomotor processes used to perform surgical tasks. Our research explores these processes through the collection of qualitative and quantitative empirical data. Our experimental work consisted of a group of novice dental surgeons and a group of expert dental surgeons performing a particular drilling task on sheep jaws. Data was collected in the form of video, audio, force measurements in three directions, interviews, and questionnaires. In this talk, we report on our findings and how they impact the design, implementation and use of VR simulators for oral surgery training. My only note would be to be sure you accommodate what we call "hunt and peck" typists. We notice quite a number of people look down at the keyboard whilst typing and only look up after they have finished. When activation occurs after the first 3 characters happens, these users often don't notice this. That is not to say you shouldn't include these types of accelerators for more advanced users but just be aware of it. I imagine that it will depend a lot on the specific system you are building and the likely technical savviness of your users. I'm wondering if there are any articles out there that have analysed various implementation of such a feature and ranked them based on their effectiveness - particularly with regard to what are the dos and don'ts for using this sort of feature. As an example, using a limited set of high level suggestions, versus a more complete set ranked by popularity; activation on focus to the field vs activation after the first 3 characters have been keyed, etc. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
