Hi Ben,
Sound to me like you're after a design pattern for autocomplete/autosuggest.
Take a look around these pattern libraries (I've included a link to their autocomplete pattern), you might find the answers to your questions.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [chisigmail] auto-suggest
Hi all,
I am currently working on a proposed implementation of an auto-suggest feature on a web form (in particular, a search).
I'm wondering if there are any articles out there that have analysed various implementation of such a feature and ranked them based on their effectiveness - particularly with regard to what are the dos and don'ts for using this sort of feature.
As an example, using a limited set of high level suggestions, versus a more complete set ranked by popularity; activation on focus to the field vs activation after the first 3 characters have been keyed, etc.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Regards
Ben
