The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia presents:
USABLE OR NOT? AN INTRODUCTION TO USABILITY AND ITS EVALUATION
With Greg Ralph of Edison Interaction Design
About the workshop
System usability is increasingly recognised as key to organisational health. Websites, employee applications and other interactive software must be crafted to be fit for use by their intended audience – so that they can best achieve such goals as staff productivity and well-being, user uptake, or sales effectiveness. Although many ergonomists and others know “in their gut” that a system’s design is problematic, they don’t necessarily have the language or the approach to diagnose, discuss or rate the severity of usability issues.
In this interactive workshop, Greg takes us through:
* What usability is all about and Why it’s important
* 10 rules of thumb on How to evaluate good and bad user interface design
* Communicate your findings
As broader context, he also revisits one of his past design projects – walking through the user-centred design process for a web-based customer support application for the RACV.
Greg’s breadth of experience means he’s not only talking from a web design perspective. He demonstrates how the way in which information is presented can seriously influence the outcomes, using examples such as the Challenger shuttle disaster and the Atlanta Olympics bomb threat. Numbers are limited to ensure plenty of interaction, discussion and networking between participants – including practice of Heuristic Evaluation (an industry-recognised method for usability evaluation.

About the Presenter
Greg Ralph has consulted in user interface design, usability strategy and applied ergonomics for almost a quarter-century. As one of Australia’s most experienced user-centred design practitioners, Greg gets a kick out of designing interactive systems that support people in their work. This is in keeping with his broader ergonomics philosophy – that well-designed jobs and tools provide great (although often unrecognised) social value.
Greg is highly regarded within the human factors and ergonomics community, and has contributed greatly to the application of ergonomics to design. He is:
* Past National Chair of the HFESA Computer-Human Interaction Special Interest Group (CHISIG).
* Past Victorian Consulting Manager for The Hiser Group, Australia’s first usability and design consultancy.
* Recipient of the HFESA Cumming Memorial Medal in 2010 for highly esteemed human factors and ergonomics-related research and application in the area of user interface design.
