Message-ID: As an experiment, the CONCORD MAGAZINE is now publishing in blog format. Find it at http://www.ConcordMA.com/blog. (There are two entries there now explaining what we are doing and why.) There's 2 ways to subscribe to this blog, which would notify you of new content: 1) RECEIVE TWICE MONTHLY NOTICE VIA EMAIL. If you are receiving this email from us, then you are already subscribed to our "old" announcement list. Using that, we will send a brief email twice a month linking to new entries. VERY occasionally, we MIGHT publish something that is so time-sensitive that we feel you'll want to know sooner. In that case, we would send an extra email about it -- but we don't anticipate this will happen often. 2) RECEIVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO EACH NEW ENTRY. Sign up for the RSS feed subscription to the CONCORD MAGAZINE BLOG using whatever favorite RSS method is. Go to http://www.ConcordMA.com/blog/atom.xml to subscribe via RSS. (Want to know what RSS feed is? Go to http://www.whatisrss.com/ ) In the meantime, ALL of our previous issues of the CONCORD MAGAZINE will remain online. Access all 47 back issues starting from 1998 here: http://www.ConcordMA.com/magazine/bigindex.html New material will begin appearing around March 5th. We anticipate we'll be blogging up through and including Town Meeting, and then assess how the trial period went. Thanks to our advisory committee who helped us shape this blog, and to YOU for being part of this experiment! "Shovel Ready Project" in Concord http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/shovel-ready-project-in-concord.html By now, we all know the phrase "shovel ready project" as it's connected with federal stimulus funding for states, cities and towns. Raising Commercial Rents in Concord: What Are They Thinking? http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/raising-commercial-rents-in-concord-what-are-they-thinking.html Imagine our great surprise to repeatedly hear that starting in November, some Concord landlords have been RAISING rents on commercial, manufacturing and retail spaces. And not just a tiny amount: some are going much, much further, driving established, family-owned, independent businesses out of both their longtime locations, and/or out of business all together. Here are some of the stories we've gathered. Massive Expansion at Hanscom Launched http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/massive-expansion-at-hanscom-launched.html Did you know that Massport has launched a massive expansion program for Hanscom? There are initiatives on at least four fronts which put together would result in doubling the hangar space for corporate jets, expanding the capacity of the short runway for landing larger planes, and demolishing historic Hangar 24. See the entire blog at http://www.ConcordMA.com/blog -- or use the index below to go to specific posts. (We do NOT promise to post this much new content all the time!) Our week-long marking of our government transparency laws in Concord -- "Sunshine Week" -- has been truly fascinating -- and there was A LOT to talk about! We are sending this index today because of the upcoming local election. We feel the issue of government accountability and transparency is a vital one; one that could weigh in your decisions at the polls. While most of our content was about "Sunshine Week," we also included other topics, too. Below we list the Sunshine posts first in (forward) chronological order. Below that, we have the other posts covering this many-faceted place called Concord. We will send a similar announcement again next week to help further inform you about issues connect to the local election coming March 31st. Then we HOPE to go to the twice-a-month schedule we had originally planned. Full index of posts is below... The Concord Magazine Blog is discussing a variety of things pertaining to "Sunshine Week," not the least of which will be my husband, Rich Stevenson's, Public Records Request to the Town of Concord in April, 2008. A year later, this is far from resolved: the Town's response was appealed by my husband to the State and that appeal is still open. The Life of One Public Records Request in Concord http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/the-life-of-one-public-records-request-in-concord.html Below is a list of documents we are making available to the public pertaining to the April 14, 2008 Request for Public Records made by Concord resident Richard Stevenson. We provide these so that the reader can gather the necessary facts to understand what has transpired. We promise much of it it will be interesting -- even astonishing -- reading. From Wiser Heads Than Ours: How to Preserve a Democracy http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/from-wiser-heads-than-ours-how-to-preserve-a-democracy.html What kind of relationship should citizens have to their government that best safeguards democracy? The below quotes from many if the most wise individuals who studied democratic societies can be summed up in one word: distrust. Open Government According to the Founding Fathers? http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/open-government-according-to-the-founding-fathers.html By Rich Stevenson, previously published in The Concord Journal in October, 2008. We offer this here as a reminder of the still vital, unanswered questions this opinion raises, and because the author's appeal to the State is still open at this time. Broken Links Fixed! Sorry... http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/broken-links-fixed-sorry.html We had reports of broken links in the first two pieces of correspondence offered in the post entitled The Life of One Public Records Request in Concord. We hope they are now fixed! (Thanks for the heads-up, readers!) Electronic Records Upset the Boat of Public Access http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/electronic-records-upset-the-boat-of-public-access-1.html Given the weight of the Massachusetts Supervisor of Record's experience and what we've witnessed ourselves over the past near-decade, we cannot take for granted that the Town understands how to properly manage its records. It may, but we cannot assume this to be so. We say this not necessarily out of distrust of the government -- though we feel that citizens have a sacred and inalienable obligation to not trust any government -- but out of the reality of what has transpired over the past decade. Personal Experience as a Creator of Public Records http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/personal-experience-as-a-creator-of-public-records.html By Debbie Bier Given the weight of the Supervisor's experience and what I've witnessed myself over the past near-decade, I cannot take for granted that the Town understands how to properly manage its records. I say this not necessarily out of distrust of the government -- though as a citizen I feel it is my sacred and inalienable obligation to not trust any government -- but out of the reality of what has transpired over the past decade. One Selectman Candidate on "Sunshine" http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/one-selectman-candidate-on-sunshine.html Here one candidate for Board of Selectman, states his election platform -- and it fits right in with Sunshine Week's theme: government accountability and transparency. EDITORIAL: Voters Really Need to Know More http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/voters-really-need-to-know-more.html We applaud that Board of Selectman David Karr has articulated a clearly expressed platform as a candidate, and has placed it on his website and beyond. We wish we saw something equivalent on the other candidates' websites in addition to statement of their experience. There's still time to remedy this. Voters really need to know. Reversing Access Problems to Public Documents http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/reversing-access-problems-to-public-documents.html Here is an excellent article from SunshineWeek.org about how the Federal government has just taken steps to reverse access problems to public documents that occured during the Ashcroft-as-Attorney-General period of our nation's history. How to Make a Public Information Request http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/how-to-make-a-public-information-request.html We publish the below here because we know enough instances now of citizens making Public Records Requests where we believe the response they received was insufficient. Requesters did not object simply because they did not know what to expect. Cool Sunshine Week Video http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/sunshine-week-video.html Fun, short video for your viewing pleasure. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * POSTS ON OTHER TOPICS: The Future of West Concord? http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/the-future-of-west-concord.html Lots going on in West Concord -- we really need to keep our eyes on all the many plans, because communication has not been great out to the public. But here's one opportunity to learn more about certain aspects, some of which will be coming up in Town Meeting. Two Concord-Related Plays Now Onstage http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/two-concord-related-plays-now-onstage.html Right now, there are two plays -- one in Boston, the other on Long Island -- with local connections. The latter is "Little Women the Broadway Musical," based on the story by Louisa May Alcott. This review calls it a "lively, light-hearted romp." The other play is Two Men of Florence, a drama about Galileo Galilei and Pope Urban VIII. It's by Richard N. Goodwin, who's been a Concordian for decades. It's at the Huntington Theater. "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" at Emerson Umbrella http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/whos-afraid-of-virginia-woolf-at-emerson-umbrella.html By Matt Johnson. A middle-aged couple arrives home from a party at 2 AM. The wife, Martha, asks her husband George to pour her a drink. To review: it's a 21' x 48' greenhouse. Keep in mind that a "solar greenhouse" means that no additional heat sources are used beyond those that are naturally occurring. That includes the sun, geothermal heat from the ground, and any heat that can be generated from decomposition or other natural, exothermic processes. ** Killer Tomato Addendum http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/killer-tomato-addendum.html Well, we no longer have to worry at this time about too many mature, indeterminate tomato plants. ** Freedom's Way National Heritage Area Now All But Law http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/03/freedoms-way-national-heritage-area-all-but-law.html On March 25, 2009, the US House of Representatives approved the formation of the Freedom's Way National Heritage Area, of which Concord is a part along with 36 other contiguous cities and Towns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. -- http://www.GreaterWellbeing.com - 978 369-8454 Wellness Education, Counseling & Coaching Holistic Healthcare, Whole Food Nutrition From magazine at concordma.com Sun Apr 12 07:53:30 2009 From: magazine at concordma.com (The Concord (MA) Magazine) Date: Sun, 12 Apr 2009 07:53:30 -0400 Subject: [Concord-Magazine] Concord Blog Posts March 30-April 12 Message-ID: Local mysteries and mushrooms are joined with editorials and epiphanies in the CONCORD MAGAZINE BLOG posts of the last two weeks. Start with the overview in this press release from Concord's Planning Department. But do use your critical thinking powers in reading it -- there are many, many important "unintended consequences" present in each article which are not mentioned. The Mystery of the Miniature Minuteman Statues http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/the-mystery-of-the-miniature-minuteman-statues.html Back in 2002, the Concord Magazine published an article about the history of the US Navy ships named "Concord." In it, author D. Michael Ryan talks about the miniature DC French Minuteman Statue that is currently aboard the USNS Concord (and shortly to be relocated before the ship is scuttled). But... but... the Concord Museum has one, too. But how this come to be was unknown, but now a bit more revealed by the Navy. Barrett Farm in Photos & Drawings http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/barrett-farm-in-photos-drawings.html Barrett Farm played an important role in the events of April 19, 1775 ("The Concord Fight). Owned by only two families over the years (the Barretts and McGraths), it was purchased by Save Our Heritage a few years ago with a mind to saving, restoring and preserving the structure, which is already well underway. Below are photos and drawings of the Barrett Farmhouse over the years. (Click on any below to see a larger version.) Tomato (et al) Update http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/tomato-et-al-update.html After having forgotten one night in March to protect the tomato plants I had planted in the solar (unheated) greenhouse), it has been clear sailing! I've added some cucumber plants, and some potted marigolds and nasturtiums are doing just fine. And we've been using fresh mint for tea all week now... Shitake Mushroom Update http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/shitake-mushroom-update.html We stored the logs in the greenhouse over the winter only because we inoculated them close to or during constantly freezing weather. Now it's time to build a garden bed in the spot they've been occupying. Yesterday, we moved the logs out (thank you, stalwart and strong husband -- oak logs are &*#^ heavy!) and rebuilt the rick in the shade of our spruce trees. There they will spend the rest of their lives, hopefully fruiting many times over the next several years. "Outlawing" Small & Organic Farming? http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/outlawing-small-organic-farming.html There is a email going around that says two bills before Congress (HR875 and S425) will "outlaw organic farming" and make it so burdensome to be a small farmer they'd just have to go out of business. We wondered if this were what these bills were actually all about. So we did some research, which we share below. Local Foraging: Pine Needle Tea http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/local-foraging-pine-needle-tea.html On this blog from time to time, we will be talking about local plants and their uses as human food, herbs, and for daily life. Concord has an enormous diversity of plant species, many of them common and plentiful, and others less so -- even rare. Today, we are making pine needle tea... Barrett Farm News http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/barrett-farm-news.html On March 30th, "Barrett Farm" Federal Legislation was signed (2009 Omnibus Public Lands bill) to extend the Minute Man National Historical Park boundary to include Barrett Farm and surrounding properties. The passage of this bill now allows the National Park to acquire Barrett Farm. (Save Our Heritage still owns the property). Old House Soul http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/old-house-soul.html The expression "old house soul" means that historic preservation isn't just about restoring an old house, but about understanding the life and history of it as an artifact. Old houses are alive: with stories, ghosts of the past, and the passion of those who loved them. Editorial: Newcomer David Karr's Campaign Changes the Dynamics http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/editorial-newcomer-david-karrs-campaign-changes-the-dynamics.html We want to congratulate Board of Selectman candidate David Karr for his run for office. A relative unknown just a month before we went to the polls, he garnered a good showing in the election. Though he didn't win a seat, his run made some vital impacts on our local landscape. Editorial: Elise Woodward Could Be a Selectman with a Strong, Independent Mind http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/editorial-elise-woodward-could-be-a-selectman-with-a-strong-independent-mind.html Woodward garnered the most votes of all three candidates. Seeing her in public during the campaign, she exhibited real poise and calm with an underlying sense strength that she didn't need to flex... and altogether quite natural. Editorial: Greg Howes Wins Second Term on the BOS http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/editorial-greg-howes-wins-second-term-on-the-bos.html Hometown man, Greg Howes, will spend another three years on the Board of Selectmen. Being chair of the board as he currently is now and running for office at the same time is not an easy combination. Congratulations are in order. However, Howes still has a substantial amount of room to grow as an elected official, particularly in translating his business experience into how to work within a democracy. Redcoat Holdouts Still Fighting in Carlisle http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/redcoat-holdouts-still-fighting-in-carlisle.html Who says there's nothing new to discover about the American Revolution? The Onion, "America's Finest News Source", has uncovered this story and it's a doozy. And it's happening right over the Concord border in Carlisle's Great Brook Farm State Park! The judicial legislative, and executive branches balance one another -- power is not concentrated in only one set of hands in our government. But an unhealthy concentration of power will be exactly what will happen if we pass Article 36 (Nonconforming Uses & Structures), Article 39 (Site Plan Review), and Article 43 (Wetlands Bylaw). ** Garden Harvest Year 'Round in Concord http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/growing-food-year-round-in-concord.html A Mediterranean climate: that's what the Pilgrims thought they would find here when they landed in what was to become Massachusetts at 42 degrees of latitude north of the equator. But they struggled mightily to just survive it in without adequate shelter, food and medicine. So many succumbed: 45 of the 102 original souls were lost in just that season alone. So what of what madness do we speak when we say that food can be grown year 'round in Concord? Here's the four-pronged secret... ** Coming to Concord in the Near Future: Slime Mold http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/fungi-of-the-near-future-slime-mold.html Recently, a new growth appeared: slime mold. We didn't recognize what it was until it started looking more familiar by the end of the first day. At first it was as if someone had sprinkled little piles of bright gold cornmeal in an area of one of the garden beds. In hours, it had started to transform to that familiar "dog vomit" appearance -- one we see often standing and darkening for weeks and months following the original outbreak of the "mold." ** New Community Garden at Ammendolia Field Coming Soon http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/new-community-garden-at-ammendolia-field-coming-soon.html The Town of Concord is planning a third community garden on a portion of the Ammendolia land, which lies between Bedford and Old Bedford Roads. Residents are invited to learn more about community gardens, find out how to participate, and how to sign up for a community garden plot. ** Gorgeous Greens In and Out of the Greenhouse http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/gorgeous-greens-in-and-out-of-the-greenhouse.html I steamed these lightly and dressed them with soy sauce and toasted sesame oil. Aren't they absolutely gorgeous?! And all from our greenhouse. We're growing nearly 20 varieties, and those don't even include the myriad lettuces available these days. ** After the Patriots' Day Parade http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/after-the-patriots-day-parade.html While we have all seen lots of wonderful photos of the parade, this year we thought we'd offer some of the after-parade business... views that not everybody gets to see. ** Dawn Salute Incident -- But It Turned Out OK! http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/dawn-salute-incident----but-it-turned-out-ok.html At this morning's Dawn Salute, there was a brief, surprising incident involving the horse and that the Dr. Prescott re-enactor was riding... ** First Tomatoes Set Fruit! http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/first-tomatoes-set-fruit.html These must have set with in the past week; we only noticed them first yesterday, though. Below first is a Roma and below that a Purple Cherokee. Whaoooo! ** Growing Ribes in Concord - Surprisingly Complicated http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/growing-ribes-in-concord---surprisingly-complicated.html We spent some time this winter trying to figure out if gooseberries and/or currants -- plus the lesser known jostaberry -- can be grown in Concord. But plant catalogs say things like: "we cannot ship currant plants to DE, MA, ME, NC, NH, NJ, RI, WV or to MA without a permit." A permit? What does it mean? This was a surprisingly difficult thing to unravel... here is what we learned. ** Let's Meet for Tea... and Courting My Vote http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/lets-meet-for-tea-and-courting-my-vote.html Regularly, I am contacted privately by proponents of projects I've spoken about questioningly or negatively on the Concord Discussion List, the Concord Magazine or this blog. They want to meet with me in person or over the phone. They are often committee members or other Town officials. I am usually not acquainted with these people, so we can guess they are courting my vote. I want to clearly state my policy here. ** Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House -- A Finalist! http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/louisa-may-alcotts-orchard-house----a-finalist.html The National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express have just named Louisa May Alcott's Orchard House - Home of Little Women a finalist for the 2009 "Partners in Preservation" Award -- a wonderful opportunity to continue our vital preservation efforts! Help us win $100,000 by voting daily on-line -- it's free and fast! ** Affordable Housing Proposal on the Prison Land http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/affordable-housing-proposal-on-the-prison-land.html Like a bombshell, this proposed project recently burst onto the public scene. Though it had been in the works for upward of 18 months, the public was not informed. People are understandably upset with both the secrecy and the lost opportunity for public input. But here is more information than has been available to the public up until the past few days... ** Emerson Turns in His Grave http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/04/emerson-turns-in-his-gravve.html Received recently from a friend of this blog, Concord born and bred from an venerable local family... Happy Spring! *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# Greenhouse Pain Report http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/05/greenhouse-pain-report.html Ok, now for the painful part of the story: what went wrong when we took off the greenhouse plastic, and what we learned as a result. And thank goodness for all that new knowledge -- otherwise, it would be all pain and no gain! Greenhouse Triumphs and Tribulations http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/05/greenhouse-triumphs-and-tribulations.html This post is a continuation of yesterday's about removing the plastic covering on our unheated greenhouse. Here is where we begin to congratulate ourselves -- and alternately groan and gnash our teeth. Let's start with the triumphs and tomorrow we'll work our way to the tribulations. Greenhouse Update: We're Riding With the Top Down! http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/05/greenhouse-update-were-riding-with-the-top-down.html "Darling, the weather is so beautiful -- no sign of frost until Fall. Shall we drive with the top down starting today?" And so began the next phase of our unheated greenhouse sojourn: sliding off the plastic covering from most of the greenhouse, opening it up to the elements. Transition Town Initiatives: Planning for Local Sustainability Course http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/05/transition-town-initiatives-planning-for-local-sustainability-course.html Transition Initiatives are a special kind of community program for developing local sustainability that have taken the United Kingdom by storm and are now spreading rapidly in the United States. Lots of harvesting this week, this time from both inside the (now open) greenhouse and the outdoor gardens. The first outdoor sowing of arugula and the third indoor sowing are at the same stage now. Think of it: our unheated greenhouse yielded us months of some vegetables that are only now coming into harvestable size outdoors. The Value of Working with Your Hands http://www.concordma.com/blog/2009/06/the-value-of-working-with-your-hands.html Working with your hands: in many traditions, this is an time-honored and revered way to make one's living. The inventiveness, the pride, the usefulness, beauty and economy of an experienced worker performing his or her craft well. Such work is often called "honest," honesty being a characteristic held in highest regard across cultures worldwide. In other cultures -- such as the one our affluent community is a part of -- working with your hands is considered by many to be both menial and demeaning.
