My course required each group of students to design a board game, either a
Eurogame or a board war game. The effort consumed half of the term, though
here terms run seven weeks with students taking three courses a term. The
best were good. Even the weakest were at least positively derivative of
board games that had been played in the laboratory sessions. We also did
design exercises of various sorts, e.g., sketch the rules if you turn the
structure of this automobile racing game into a political election game.
The exercises were taken in part from the two Game Design books we wrote
for the course, seen at http://3mpub.com/phillies
