Apologies for cross posting. Invitation from the Virtual Policy Network and The University of Edinburgh to this year's Digital Interactive Symposium: Edinburgh: http://www.virtualpolicy.net/dise08.html The focus of this year's Digital Interactive Symposium: Edinburgh (DIS:E) ? August 12th 2008 is education for the computer games industry. The issue of educational support for the games industry is a hot topic at the moment, especially in Scotland. In April 2008 the Scottish government controversially announced that schoolchildren are to be taught the basics of video game design as part of the country's new national curriculum - dubbed the 'Curriculum of Excellence'. In the face of the UK's dwindling numbers of maths, computing and engineering graduates the country's two computer games industry trade bodies TIGA (The Independent Games Developers Association) and Elspa (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) have joined forced to announce the Games Up? campaign. Through Games Up? The industry has highlighted the need to improve education for the sector; ease skills shortages; and promote workforce diversity. In response to the growing popularity of computer games both as a pastime and as career path a number of universities around the UK are now offering game development courses, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The methods and emphasises of these courses however vary widely. Skillset offers an accreditation for game development courses, but only four courses so far have this accreditation. Many academic institutions also question the value and meaning of such an accreditation. The Digital Interactive Symposium: Edinburgh will bring industry and education together to debate best approaches to these challenging problems which face one of the UK's most successful sectors. The symposium will address issues such as: What should the relationship between industry and academia be like? Are universities responsible for meeting the needs of the industry? Should the industry get more involved with sponsoring and nurturing university courses? How can education help foster innovation in game development? Speakers include Prof. Richard Bartle (University of Essex), Dr. Eyj?lfur Gu?mundsson (CCP / EvE Online), Prof. Austin Tate (University of Edinburgh) and Dr. Gianna Cassidy (Glasgow Caledonian University) The Digital Interactive Symposium: Edinburgh (DIS:E) is co-produced by the Virtual Policy Network (www.virtualpolicy.net) and the University of Edinburgh; and is in partnership with the Edinburgh Interactive Festival (http://www.edinburghinteractivefestival.com/). This year's event is co-located with the Edinburgh Interactive Festival at the Edinburgh International Conference centre. As with last year DIS:E are offering a special rate and joint booking with the Edinburgh Interactive Festival. To register for DIS:E only, at a cost of ?50 (free for full time students, but registration still necessary), go here:http://www.virtualpolicy.net/diseBooking.html To book for Edinburgh Interactive and DIS:E - download booking form here. ren --8<-- web: www.renreynolds.com Think Tank: www.virtualpolicy.net blog: terranova.blogs.com m (UK): +44(0) 7778 285 273 m (US, only when I?m there): +1 646-417-0641 Skype: RenZephyr Twitter: twitter.com/RenZephyr Facebook: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=734676997 Linked-in: www.linkedin.com/in/renreynolds aim | bebo | club penguin | cyworld | del.icio.us | EvE | gax | gia | habbo (UK) | iLike | jaiku | last.fm | LOTR (EU: Laurelin) | MapelStory | pownce | profilactic | rupture | skype | secondlife | there.com | tumblr. | twitter | upcoming | wacoopa | XBox Live: RenZephyr facebook | flickr | MySpace | openID | plaxo: Ren Reynolds WoW (US Ettrig): Cabot Moshi Monster: www.moshimonsters.com/monsters/renreynolds dopplr: www.dopplr.com/traveller/RenReynolds spock: http://www.spock.com/user3c4282p51k10169012ck4cc82ss12k273757s00 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: For those of you using UT3 in the fall to teach level design -- what book(s) are you using? For UT2004, I was using Busby's "Mastering Unreal Technology: The Art of Level Design", but the new version for UT3 won't be out until December 15 (acording to Amazon, and that date has moved several times). The Busby videos (the ones that ship with the editor's choice edition of the the game) are great. In the past, I transcribed several of the introductory UT2004 videos for the class to use. The class found that to be extremely helpful, so I am now starting to transcribe some of the UT3 videos. But, it's very time-consuming, so I was wondering if 1) anyone has already done this or planning to do this so we can share notes? 2) do you have a UT3 book with good tutorials? If anyone is still using UT2004 and would like to use my notes from the older videos, here are a few - enjoy: http://www.montgomerycollege.edu/faculty/~dsolomon/public_html/IS195/UnrealNotes.html Deborah Solomon www.studygaming.com From ataghaviburris at occc.edu Fri Aug 1 14:44:25 2008 From: ataghaviburris at occc.edu (AkramTaghavi-Burris) Date: Fri, 01 Aug 2008 13:44:25 -0500 Subject: [game_edu] Unreal 3 book/videos? We cover a little of Maya, and there are still a few similarities so the book has some uses. I've also provided access to all the video tutorials I got with UT3 to the students so they can compare the new features to the old ones. Last year's Ohio Game Jam was a lot of fun (you can still see the results at http://www.ohiogamejam.org/?). It's taken me awhile to find a venue for the second year, so it's in the Fall this time around. If you know any students, faculty or professionals interested in making games over the weekend of September 20-21 in Columbus, Ohio, I'm taking advance signups now (email an RSVP to ai864 at yahoo.com?and let me know how many people are coming). ? For anyone who has not heard of a Game Jam before, it's an event where people work in small teams over a short period (24 hours in this case) to make a complete game from scratch. We need all kinds of developers -- artists, designers, audio, programmers -- and even the unskilled can still head out to fetch coffee and pizza for the rest of us :). All skill levels and types welcome. ? The main benefit of a Game Jam is educational. Participants get to experience a complete development cycle compressed into a single weekend. It's a great opportunity to try out a new development methodology (maybe you've been hearing about "agile" and want to give it a go without risking millions of dollars), learn a new skill (last time I participated in one of these, I taught myself Python in a weekend), or just hone your development skills by working on a complete project. People in industry tend to enjoy the ability to get really creative and?experimental in a way that's not always possible with a funded development project. In my experience, participants always enjoy the experience and are usually amazed at what they were able to accomplish in such a short period of time. ? I'll send more details on the location and exact times to those who RSVP. ? Thanks, - Ian -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The SIG also will need assistance pulling this off, as this is a global effort. What the SIG plans to do is a Global Game Jam ? 48 hours around the world, an experience in creativity, innovation and experimentation. That is the same 48 hours ? January 30th ? February 1st, 2009. Everyone will be given similar constraints and rules, but each time zone will get one unique constraint to make their games just a little different and culturally diverse. The Nordic Game Jam has honored us with being our flagship Game Jam. We would like to see professional developers, students and wanabes come together and have an incredible experience in collaboration and inventiveness. A Game Jam is not a competition, it is unique "idea space" where sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. The Global Game Jam will archive all of the games for everyone to play. Detail about what it is we are doing, how we plan to do it and what we are looking for in hosts venues is up on the website: http://www.globalgamejam.org. We are looking for places to hold the local Game Jams. If you think you can host a local jam, please follow the instructions on the website and email the details to: info at globalgamejam.org. I am looking for people outside of North America to help promote the Global Game Jam idea. We also need help in translating materials into various languages. The Nordic Game Jam White Paper is currently being translated from Danish to English, but we will also need Spanish, French, Japanese (I have someone helping me with the Chinese). We would love to see a local Game Jam in the Mid-East, Africa, Latin America, Russia, Asia... you name it. This is going to be a global experiment and the SIG will not be able to do it without your assistance. This is not just for students, this is a way to bring everyone interested in video games, young or old, together in the spirit of making games. No experience is necessary, but it sure helps. Official announcement of the Global Game Jam will take place at the Sandbox Symposium (http://sandbox.siggraph.org/) co-located at SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles this weekend. While in the past entertainment technology traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences, continual advances in network and computer technologies are providing tools for implementing greater interactivity and for enabling consumers to enjoy more exciting experiences, such as, for example, interactive digital TV, interactive theatre and orchestrated music and sound design. This phenomenon is pulling together an extremely diverse group of experts specializing in different technical areas, such as networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games, animation, multimedia design, human-computer interaction, educational media and software engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired communication is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of building a large interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum entertainment value to millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect, there is a great hope that the wired and wireless may take over this complex scenario for fulfilling the consumer expectations. The Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Networking Issues in Multimedia Entertainment provides an open forum for researchers, engineers and academia to exchange the latest technical information and research findings on next-generation networked multimedia concepts, technologies, systems, and applications for entertainment covering existing deployments, current developments and future evolution. Authors are solicited to submit complete unpublished papers in the following, but not limited to, topic areas: Application for Entertainment * Architectures, Platforms and Protocols for Networked Games * Internetworking, Vertical Roaming and Session * Handoffs for Entertainment (Internet to WLAN, to 3G/BT/...) * Home LANs, Body and Personal Area Networks for Entertainment * Media and Device Adaptation * Music and Movie Distribution * Next Generation Wireless Technologies for Entertainment (IEEE802.11n, UWB and Beyond) * Opportunistic Multi-hopping and Opportunistic Networks for Entertainment * QoS and Security Support for Entertainment * Resource and Service Discovery Technologies (P2P, LDAP) * Technologies for Networked In-Home/Car/Flight/Train Entertainment * TV-Centric and Broadcast Networks for Entertainment Technologies for Entertainment * Agent-based Entertainment * Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality * Artificial Intelligence * Evolutionary Entertainment * Interactive Television and Theater * Massive Multiplayer Games * Mobile and Wireless Entertainment * Networked Entertainment * Networked Narrative and Digital Interactive Storytelling * Networked Video, Music and Sound Design * Pervasive Entertainment * Personalized and User-Adapted Television * Sport, News and Entertainment * Virtual Technology and Virtual Environments for Entertainment * Wearable Entertainment * Wireless and Mobile Gaming * Testbed and Performance Evaluation GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION ============================ Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. * Paper length should not exceed five-page technical paper manuscript.
