[games_access] games_access Digest, Vol 89, Issue 17

Let's be honest though. People want to play Dragon Age, Forza 3, DiRT3 and
the like FAR more than Shoot1 Up or Golf Tour. Showcase good games; it helps
steer people away from thinking only silly little games can be accessible.
I'd listen to Ian.

Good call.

Re. request for nice stories - loads here via the booklets:
http://www.specialeffect-games.org.uk/ - that we'd be chuffed if you'd
consider adding one or two from. Happy to give you a bit more back-ground on
any.

Lovely wedding snaps by the way. Liked the dinosaur!

I also recommend Shoot 1 Up. I used it for a accessibility arcade/
presentation at the Orlando Science Center this past January. I set up the
game and turned on one button mode and made the players play with an arcade
stick, and then after playing 1 round with though options allowed them to
change the settings to whatever they wanted. It was a big hit.

Additionally on Tekken 6- It also has remappble controls if you wished to
use some sort of custom controller with it.

Barrie mentioned Half life- I also recommend other Valve titles as well.
They all have closed captions and most have remappable controls. I demoed
Portal once. Colorblind friendly, remappable controls, closed captions or
subitles, no time limits. It's not violent and doesn't use bad language, so
it's good to have around kids.

Maybe go for Wii's "Let's Tap" which has the experiential/sensory
"Visualiser" modes (lovely arty ones, fireworks, and fish botherer mode) -
including a proper low-pressure game of trying to get balls into a cup in as
few taps as possible.

For Xbox 360 - Maybe "Shoot 1UP", which is one SpecialEffect just used at
Develop, Brighton (which brought back happy memories of 2006). This game has
high-contrast options, speed control, one-switch mode and various difficulty
levels too. Needs a internet connection though to get signed in to Xbox
Live.

If no Xbox live connection, we also demo'ed Tekken 6, which has a lovely
training zone, where you can set up a two player mode (we used a one-hand
controller for one player, vs. two switches for another). The great thing
about Tekken 6, is that on each tap of Punch of kick, your player moves
towards the opponent. With two buttons you can use special moves (e.g. hold
both down), giving you some strategy possibilities. Plus you can use the
handicap system to make it harder for one player than another.

Ditto Ian, re. Forza 3, which we used at last years EuroGamer:
http://www.gamebase.info/magazine/read/forza-motorsport-3-_191.html and it
went down well. You can do the same with Dirt 3.

We also demo'ed Half-Life 2 for the remapping modes, and full
subtitles/closed-captions.

For PS3, how about Everybody's Golf World Tour? You can play 18 holes using
just one-button on its easiest settings.

Hope it goes well, Sandra.

Sorry, forgot to say.. Forza is Xbox 360 only. So Forza on Xbox, Dragon Age
on PS3?

Dragon Age Origins has fantastic subtitling including optional audio
description, and a host of other nice accessibility features. It won
ablegamers game of the year for 2009. It's PC / 360 / PS3. Dragon Age 2 is
out now, I haven't played it though, don't know if it has the same options
available.

If you're after something that's assistive tech compatible then Forza 3 is a
really nice one to show, works with two switches.. they also have an
ablegamers game of the year award behind them.
