[IGDA Mobile-SIG List] iPhone Game Market

Hi Ohad,

the Greystripe model is "fair" - you make revenues on it. Revenues are
coming in regular when your games have a high replay value. But not
enough to feed a whole company so its ok for garage developers or young
developer studios who want to check out the market. HandyGames was one
of the first publisher who supported Greystripe not only cause of
revenues also for checking out which game the market really want. The
operators filter normally games and on greystripe every game gets the
same visibility and the consumer is choosing. The performance from some
titles are totally different from the ones that are live at the operator
decks.

Cheers,

Christopher

iPhone's AppStore is indeed doing well, yet it's still left to see how
this can affect the sales of games other then the big publishers. We
already have one game on the store and for now we're quite noticeable,
but I'm not sure how things will be as more apps joining. It will
probably get even more interesting once more apps will become available
and we might find ourselves in the same problem we had on operators'
catalogs, getting noticed within all the other games around.

I haven't seen figures yet on the Greystripe supported games. Anyone has
a clue how well are they doing? How many games out with it and how much
did they actually make to the developers?

Here's some numbers to chew on.

60m downloads, probabily 6m paid, $30m in revenue, therefore average
price of $5.

Sega Super Monkey Ball generated $3m in gross revenue from 300k sales
at $9.99 a pop. That means that this title represented 10% of overall
sales revenue or 5% of unit sales.

Our title, Remelody, had feature placement for six days we are still
waiting for the sales figures from the 1st two weeks of sales, I suspect
that is when the bulk of sales occured. It will be interesting to see.

It may be that the Greystripe Ad Model makes sense for some titles.

Next will be our branded (Kenny Rogers, The Gambler) casino games. More
excitement no doubt.

Good to hear people is still listening to this thing. We're also still
working on mobile, but we're sort of an impasse due to the mobile market
turmoil... namely, iphone + sales being mysteriously low for a
just-released game (we released an unlicensed summer games themed game)

Our guess is that it's time to think out of the box for a while. And
it's damn scary.

I'm also still in business, and working on mobile games.

Mobiles can do 3D graphics, OpenGL ES 2.0 it's almost here, the question
is : Are mobile users interested on better graphics on their mobiles ?
Or are we developers going again by the way phone manufactures guide us
?

The iPhone's app store is the real deal. Apple reports 60m downloads,
$30m in sales ... all in one month.

Check out our 1st title, REMELODY.

I'm still here too, but I thought this list was dead.

N-gage's gonna have it tough again I think. Might have been great if it
weren't for the iphone App store, but now it looks like its in a tight
spot.

Plus, 3D games and a cellphone keyboard were never best friends. Look at
a Dualshock and it's no mystery why. 2.5d, 2d with 3d graphics, yeah.
Real 3d game, no. Just my oppinion.
