Hi Steve - As to the percentage of readiness for CAP, I think on of the vendors made an off-hand estimate about the % readiness in the broadcast and cable sector.

I think a more conservative estimate might be 60+% of the CATV industry.

Three products from two vendors have successfully completed the IPAWS conformity assessment process. As I posted a week or so ago, we were pleased to note that the R189 One-Net (Monroe Electronics) and the DASDEC-II (Digital Alert Systems) successfully completed the IPAWS conformity assessments.

The Monroe R189 One-Net is currently installed in over 60% of the cable television industry. These systems are installed with a device that is IPAWS conformed.

Those CATV systems with this unit can anticipate a few updates, including software and some guidance on IP connections so the One-Net can monitor the IPAWS aggregator over the web ... (plus some additional updates once the government provides us with some critical detail).

More specifically, cable operators with a One-Net will be contacted with info about additional CAP updates. Information about specific connectivity (IPAWS URL/URI) ons and keys to the IPAWS aggregator feed). Some of that information is still pending from the government, but is easily transferred to the devices in the field once FEMA makes the info available to the vendors.

In addition, we will be assisting cable operators with connections to their respective state and local CAP sources. The One-Net supports connections to Comlabs EMnet (14+ states), MyStateUSA (2 states), CA EDIS , NY Alerts and a range of other state CAP systems.

The government will not be providing a "list" of products, per se. Rather, the two vendors/three products will be listed on the FEMA RKB website. Navigating through the RKB might be a bit tedious, as everything from personal protective gear to sensors to radios is listed there.

Hope this helps,
Ed

Gary,

Thanks for your excellent report. I look forward to the rest of the series. I'm curious about the comment of 35% of broadcasters and 80% of cable operators already have installed CAP equipment.

In the cable industry, we are basically down to two cable-specific EAS vendors. One is telling me they are accepting orders but not shipping until they pass FEMA conformance testing. I am not aware of any product that has officially past yet; I haven't seen a list of conforming products.

In discussions with some of the larger cable operators, I have yet to hear any claims that they are ready. I think everyone is waiting for the results of FEMA testing. I do not see how the percentage of EAS participants ready for CAP can be anywhere near as high as stated.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks.

Steve
