A pioneer in the field of compositional linguistics, Mann describes the discipline as, "the mechanism whereby you understand what I'm thinking better than I do." Mann's ability and style of reading dense texts at high speeds has earned him an international reputation as a performer. Currently teaching at The New School in New York, Mann has performed in collaboration with Tomas Buckner, Annea Lockwood, and Larry Polansky. A host of individuals and institutes have commissioned Mann to create work, including BBC, NPR, John Cage, and Ars Electronica. 60x60 is the creation of Robert Voisey who is the artistic director as well as founder of Vox Novus, and vice-president of programs at the Living Music Foundation. He is composer, performer, promoter, and presenter of post-modern contemporary art music. A recorded work, 60x60 showcases 60 electronic works, 60 seconds in length (or less) each by a different composer, and played in succession to create a one hour concert. Experimental filmmaker and St. Louisan Zlatko Cosic has created video art to accompany "60x60," adding a visual element to the evening. Cosic, an accomplished multimedia artist, has been commissioned by the Pulitzer Foundation and the Regional Arts Commission, among others. It is a little hectic in Vox Novus central. -First ideablob has still not selected a winner. 60x60 was not first; however, they informed they would be doing a background check on the winner. When that was successful they would announce the winner. If not they would select the next in line. The fact that they have not announced a winner leads me to believe there is still a chance to win. -Next, we are still receiving 60x60 submissions for 2008. The submissions deadline for Canada has been extended to the 15th. Since the deadline is early this year, the project is being extremely lenient with receipt of submissions. The next deadline for the 60x60 project will be in December and will be the new deadline date from here on after. -We have created a Pacific Rim mix for 2007/2008 and the first performance will be next week 8:00 PM Friday April 18th, 2008 at Mills College. PLEASE NOTE the date of this performance has changed! I will be attending this concert. I hope I will get to meet so many of the composers in the Bay area I have corresponded with these past few years. -Speaking of people in the Bay area, I want to highlight a friend and ally to Vox Novus. Culture Consumer has printed several Vox Novus T-Shirts; here is a little story about the journey: http://www.voxnovus.com/about/T-Shirt.htm Please support the cause and buy a T-Shirt either online or come down to Mills College and get one. -Also more concerts. I will be attending a performance of the 60x60 (2007) mix at the CSUF Second Annual New Music Festival, California State University, Fresno, California 5:00 PM Saturday April 19th, 2008. -And there will be a performance of the 60x60 (2007) mix Los Angeles Harbor College, Wilmington, California 12 Noon Saturday April 19th, 2008 that same day. (unfortunately I won't be at this performance, but if you are in the area, please say hello to Rodney Oakes an old time 60x60 champion) -The next double CD album of 2006/2007 containing 120 works from those 2 years is almost finished. One last hiccup and we are off to the presses. Sorry for the delay. I hope to have them out for the end of April. We have some great new venues and some fantastic collaboration coming up for 2008! 2008 is going to be a short year as the project is changing is season cycle. The new cycle will be better for everyone in the long run. Thanks for all your support! It is going to be another exciting year! See you soon! We were a finalist and now in their "hall of fame", which is good despite the loss. Many have suggested I plan to enter again, but to plan it in the future so we can muster votes. I am not sure if this is a practical endeavor but I am willing to entertain the idea if there was a significant interest to do so. Again, I want to thank you all for your comments and efforts. The event did generate a lot of interest and I will use the "hall of fame" status for future promotion. Talk to you soon! I have been encouraged by two recent collaborators to go on a grant writing campaign. I just received a Puffin grant for our Composer's Voice concert series; Puffin has been one of Vox Novus's faithful supporters. More will come soon about the Composer's Voice series. Meanwhile, I have received about 7-8 small grants in the past, but this time I am hoping to reel in a couple of big fish. Especially for 60x60, there are some special things in store for that this year. I do need help of course. most importantly I need your feedback. The last time I applied for this grant I was told that they did not think that the 60x60 project was a particular benefit to a composer's career. (I am assuming because the composition is only 1 minute long) This was a long time ago (the project's second year) and I the project has proven itself; however, if I could get endorsements I think it would help me a great deal. In particular I need two particular testimonials: The first of composers/artists who are starting out in the career submitted to 60x60 and how the project has helped or inspired them. The second of artists who are well established in the field and can speak of the merits of 60x60 compare to other work they know. Lastly, positive feedback isn't key to me. constructive feedback is. If anyone has a comment that they think could make the project better. PLEASE share it with me. I hope that after 6 years I am getting the hang of things, but I am always looking to improve. Some things are hard to achieve. (i.e. an online submission engine) but I am striving for them. others. well maybe other elude me so feedback is always crucial. Thanks for your time and your support, Rob P.S. If you are an artist other than a composer, musician, audience member, or new music enthusiast, your feedback is more than welcome. I would love to hear from you!
