Compuserve had a number of online multiplayer games that were active I
recall in the early 90's. I'm not sure if the Internet itself is key to
these claims.

Online Gaming Patent... Prior art

I started www.tournamentgames.com in late 1997 with an online Solitaire
tournament.
A patent has been applied for on this online tournament game. As far as
I
know this
was the first online Casual game tournament.

Prior to that I also had a coin-op Tournament Solitaire game licensed to
Dynamo corp
and manufactured and operated in 1994 or 1995. The patent for this game
was
filed
on Nov 8 1995 and the a patent (#5711715) was granted on Jan 27, 1998.

The coin-op game was not networked/internet but it was tournament play
and
had a real time
ranking system.
