[casual_games] The Definition of Casual Games

That reminds me ... I wrote a 3d 'roll the ball around levels collecting stuff a bit like hamsterball only ugly' game. The game had 12 levels getting increasingly difficult until level 12 was near impossible. It'd then loop around to the beginning if by some miracle they completed it. The idea was that people would probably get to around 7 or 8 (after getting used to the game, it'd take around 10-15 minutes to get to level 8) before the novelty would wear off and they'd find something else to do.

It totally blew me away when I started getting requests from users for a new version with more levels, since I actually thought the game was so shallow it'd be hated the world over ... you just roll around and pick stuff up ... that's all! These people had gone to the trouble of e-mailing the game site it was on, getting my e-mail address then telling me how they wanted more. Strange folk, them casual gamers!

Jeff.

Honestly, I don’t think so. We have some players coming to our forums with requests and feedback that one would traditionally associate with hardcore gamers. For example, we have a RocketBowl fan from North Carolina who is currently on a mission to bowl a 300 on every course in the game and is writing a strategy guide about his experiences! If that’s not hardcore, I don’t know what is.

Now you're getting into territory that might best be left unexplored - "Hardcore Casual Games"? Isn't that an oxymoron? :)
