Hi Rameshan,

Couple things you should do:

1. read some basic texts on the subject - both on design &
implementation. I recommend Raph Koster's book as well as the Crawford
book on design. On the programming side there are plenty of web sites
(as well as the DirectX SDK docs) and any number of books.

2. Implement something. Anything. Game Companies are more likely to hire
you if you can show that you can implement something (rather than just
'I'd like to'). They can be simple games, but still do something.

3. Network. Get to know other people in the industry. IGDA has a
Hyderabad chapter (not sure where you are in India). See here:
http://www.igda.org/chapters/
Also, an 'India Game Developers Guild' launched last week. Sounds like
it would be of interest:
http://www.indiagamedevguild.org/

4. Play lots of games! Understand what has made others popular or not,
what was deemed successful or not, etc. Part of understanding the craft.

Best of luck!

Kim

Hi Rameshan,

You seem to have the skills to develop either downloadable or online
games, so I'd say the first thing to do is figure out what sort of
game you'd like to create.

From my experience, you can prototype a Flash game very quickly so
doing that would give you a good idea of whether you enjoy it and how
well your game ideas translate. Another idea is to rewrite an
existing game, so you could create your own version of Tetris or Q-
Bert and take it from there. I tend to do something similar to that
when I'm learning new languages (Python/Ruby etc).

Good luck!

Duncan

Welcome to the group Rameshan,

Really, it depends on how you see yourself in the game industry. If you
don't mind working on other peoples games, then webdesign generally
translates really well to HUD and Interface design for games, and im
sure
with a good portfolio, you could get hired somewhere.

If you primarily wish to create your own games, using your own design, I
suggest you take duncas advice and try making a game in macromedia/Flash
and
then you can test your apptitude for the format.
