Position Available
Online Leadership Program Associate
"The great thing about being on the cutting-edge is that there are no
answers. And that's what makes it so fun." -- Lawrence Krauss,
Theoretical Physicist
Global Kids, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to
transforming urban youth into successful students and global and
community leaders, is seeking an Online Leadership Program Associate.
The OLP Associate must be available to begin work in early January,
2006.
The OLP Associate will join GK's Online Leadership Program team. The
OLP works with young people to develop web-based dialogues and
socially-conscious games that inspire youth worldwide to learn and
take action about global and public affairs. Now in its sixth year,
the OLP is ready to engage in a significant expansion with the
addition of its first OLP Associate. The OLP current has two main
areas of focus: online games and online dialogues.
Playing 4 Keeps is an innovative youth media project, in which a team
of Global Kids Leaders at South Shore High School are gaining
leadership and game design skills that they will use to develop and
produce one socially conscious online game each year. Once produced,
the game will have the potential to educate thousands of young people
about a critical global issue. The program is a collaboration with
the award-winning online game design company gameLab (gmlb.com), and
the GK Leaders at South Shore will work closely with gameLab's
experts to produce their game. This program began in Sept, 2005.
In collaboration with the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Global Kids has
launched Newz Crew, which combines Global Kids' unique, interactive
approach to public policy education, youth leadership and online
learning with NewsHour's media content to stimulate rich online
dialogues involving youth in the United States and around the world.
Students from Canarsie High School were integral in creating Newz
Crew and meet in weekly after-school leadership training workshops
and activities to hone leadership and digital literacy skills and to
help shape the Newz Crew project. The site can be viewed at
<www.NewzCrew.org>.
In addition to our work using gaming and dialogues, the OLP's staff,
and occasionally our participating youth, are called upon to play a
consulting role. More information about the program can be found at
<http://www.GlobalKids.org/olp>
The Online Leadership Program Associate will be involved in all of
these projects, and more. It is impossible to detail all potential
tasks but, in broad strokes, the OLP Associate will collaborate with
GK's team of educators, report to the OLP Director, and be
responsible for the following:
o Helping to develop curriculum material on such themes as
civic participation, human rights, leadership development, news
literacy, digital literacy, and game design.
o Developing and co-facilitating interactive, experiential
workshops and activities for GK's weekly school-based after-school
leadership groups.
o Assisting the OLP Director in the coordination of the online
media projects.
o Working with the OLP Director in regards to conference
presentation, networking, fundraising, intern management, and
developing new ideas for future projects.
The ideal candidate is resourceful, creative, and a team-player who
possess the following capabilities and experiences:
o College degree with understanding of youth development and
digital media.
o Experience applying interactive experiential learning
strategies, counseling and conflict resolution skills, and youth
development/leadership strategies in culturally diverse settings.
o A passion for the potential of digital media to develop
leadership skills, expand democratic ideals, and educate for a better
world.
o Familiarity with public high school curricula and foreign
policy issues.
o Knowledge of youth media, Internet technology, global issues,
and social activism.
o Ability to take initiative and juggle multiple tasks independently.
o Strong communication, writing, organizational, and computer skills.
o Strong desire to work with high school students and teachers.
o A short learning curve around new digital and Internet tools
and applications.
o Proficiency with Macintosh computers.
