I agree that overly cute or kid-like characters often do not perform as
well in the casual games space. exceptions? there are always exceptions
-- the character in magic match being one example. just look at the top
games that jams smith sent around a few weeks ago and see how many of
these use what might be deemed as overly cute or kid-like characters.
they are definitely in the minority:

-Bejeweled 2 Deluxe

-Zuma Deluxe

-Insaniquarium Deluxe

-Diner Dash

-Ancient Tripeaks

-Magic Vines

-QBeez 2

-Mah Jong Adventures

-Wheel of Fortune (and other Sony games that didn't make my "popular"
list)

Torque Game Builder (Torque2D)

-Fortune Tiles Gold

-Platypus

-Rainbow Web

-Fiber Twig

-Fiber Twig 2

-Fresco Wizard

-Adventure Inlay ???(or may be C++ if this one was done by GameHouse)

-Luxor

-Luxor - Amun Rising

-Mad Caps

-Chainz 2 - Relinked

-Feeding Frenzy

-Iggle Pop!

-Chuzzle Deluxe

-Big Kahuna Reef (Reflexive Framework)

-Rebound Lost Worlds (Reflexive Framework)

-Rebound Lost Worlds - Recharged (Reflexive Framework)

-Cosmic Bugs

-Water Bugs

-Granny in Paradise

-Bricks of Egypt

-Bricks of Atlantis

-Snowy - Treasure Hunter

-Cubis Gold 2

-Ballistik

-Puzzle Solitaire

-Jewel Quest (iWin framework)

-Mah Jong Quest (iWin framework)

-Casino Island To Go

-Mahjong Garden To Go

-Phlinx To Go

-Gem Shop

-7 Wonders

-Magic Match

Well, let’s paste the entire sentence, since the context of the message
may be understood differently. Here is what the sentence says:

“Casual Games players get put off by "cute" characters or visual
elements that make the sensation of watching a Saturday morning
cartoon.”

So, is this statement true or false? Can the visual theme of a casual
game look like a Saturday morning cartoon?

I’d love to hear ideas on how to rephrase the idea too to be more clear.
Thanks,

Juan

I’d say the characters in Chuzzle are “cute”.

Coincidently enough, I was just editing the Production and Design
section of the White Paper this morning and writing about that topic:

http://www.igda.org/wiki/index.php/Casual_Games_SIG/Whitepaper/Productio
n_and_Design#Lively_and_Bright_Visuals

I’d love to hear what other people think. And while I have your
attention, the Production and Design section of the White Paper needs
volunteers! Anyone interested feel free to email me.

Cheers,

Juan

Seems apparent that game developers are picking easily recognizable
motifs with which to theme their games. They probably feel they are
strengthening their brands by relying on the context provided by
familiar themes and narratives. Think of all the games out there which
use themes such as camelot, atlantis, ancient egypt, etc.

Hi there!

I have seen that a lot of casual games use aztec and
Indiana-Jones-like themes. Just Zuma cloning, or something else?
