That's a strange thing to hear... I work with JPEG2000 a lot and I've never
seen any usual 24-bit image to be smaller in JPEG than in J2K (with the
same quality). Of course, if you have, say, 16-color images JPEG2000
will be inferior to PNG :)

For Bonnie's Bookstore backgrounds it looks like PNG would do best,
but I doubt that JPEG will win against J2K...

What tool did you use to compress the images?
