4) Casual games biz defines the core users as considerably older than the folks playing Capcom games in the heyday.

I actually think this definition needs reviewing. A very large %age of my audience are under 20 years old. Since "casual games" include such a large range of game styles, I think its difficult to define a "core" group of users. Look at a site such as bonus.com. All casual games and their core audience are children.

  Several points I would make in response;

  1) The US public is not very sophisticated or at least not very well informed about the breadth of animation. Many people still assume animated=kids. This makes using it as a style for a game targeted at adults a risky proposition.

  2) Older games were limited by the graphics they could display. In particular color depth. This made cartoon style a good choice.

  3) Themes tend to go in fads, much like game genres do.

  4) Casual games biz defines the core users as considerably older than the folks playing Capcom games in the heyday.

    I've seen in most of the lastest casual games mostly, that the style chosen by game developers is like old runes or egipcian, something like that, almost always. Far away have been left the old 'good games' that wrote a line in hostory such as Super Mario, Nintendo in general or even Capcom and fighting games. Even although this is a different target, weren't some games in that age aimed to adults, with 'cartoon friendly' graphics?
