Dan Scherlis often makes the joke of the definition of game genre as "a hit
and its imitators" or something like that.

Exactly. Adding and improving upon a successful idea is how most games
(and other inventions) are made, it would be ridiculous to expect that
every game created a new genre. I agree that the main problem is the
direct copies, reskinnings of successful games, and I'm aware you've
suffered a lot from these kinds of games lately.
