[casual_games] TOW: Telecommuting

Hello Sheri,

Thanks for putting out these "Topic of the Week" emails. This one is
right up my alley. I'm fortunate enough to be able to work from home 2
days a week. The other 3 days I work at our office which is about an
hour from my home. I joined our company 7 years ago, and at that time
everyone telecommuted. When the company finally moved into an office,
the boss let me split my time between work and home. Most of the other
workers live much closer to the office.

It was a challenge at first - after all, we all have that mental list of
everything that needs doing around the house. It's tempting to want to
take a few minutes here and a few minutes there for things. Eating
snacks can be a temptation too - especially when the kitchen is only a
few steps away. Lot's of temptations to get out of my chair, and that
means having to get back into the mental groove when I come back. I
definitely learned how to fight those temptations, at least most of the
time!

Working from home does allow me to really concentrate when I'm doing
some heads-down coding - no people milling around, phones ringing, etc.
But the downside is, you don't have that handy coworker around to pick
their brain. I can chat with my coworkers, or use the phone when I'm
home, but it's not the same. Sometimes that idle bantering you do in an
office will get the ball rolling or clear a mental block, or inspire
something new.

And of course, being able to sit down to work, unshaven and wearing my
fuzzy slippers and robe is the best! Although I think my wife would
disagree.

Thanks,

Greg
