I constantly use subtitles myself as a visual memo, to appreciate linguistic and literary devices, to learn and improve vocabulary, foreign languages, ...

You'd be right to think I am bias, but I have been doing this since I was a kid and my hearing and sight are good.

Sandra,

subtitles are great, not just for hearing impaired.

eg noisy environments, equipment without audio.
if English is not your first language, text with audio is a great help.
one could even search for text, though not audio yet.

allowing the user to access information in a format they like.
