It sounds like this was a simple contract to perform a known service so
the following doesn't completely apply.
That said... I've done a lot of subcontracting in game development.
I've worked crazy hours to hit deadlines and people made money because I
and others did so. In some cases there were hard technical problems to
solve that simply couldn't be done in a guaranteed amount of time - I
think in most of those cases I got lucky, especially early on before
teams got huge, and things were delivered on time, games hit the shelves
for Christmas, etc. etc.. That said, as teams have gotten huge, as
there are many masters to be served (some of whom conflict and not
always at the same time so that interim efforts get wasted) and there
many cogs who must supply their parts, it's not always nearly as simple
as all that.
Geez, I'm getting wound up just thinking about this stuff. Glad I've
gone indie.
