Roberto -

In the USA, individuals and small businesses can use websites that offer
very good rates, often better than group plans. We use
http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ and have never found a more cost effective
place for insurance.

Unfortunately, group rates are typically not negotiated through the brands
directly but through a broker. Most insurance brands operate independently
state by state, so even though there might appear to be international
insurance companies - it isn't really that simple. Since most (non-USA)
countries offer basic health coverage for their citizens, this is one
initiative that just doesn't make sense to offer outside the USA.

Best,

Jessica

It would be great if the health plan could be extended also to international
members: after all, it's "IGDA" and not "AGDA" (American Game Developers
Association). As someone who lives outside of the US, I'd love to see these
kind of initiatives also for international members. Big insurance companies
operate in several countries so it shouldn't be impossible to do more on
this (and if this gets done, most likely I'll sign for the life membership).

In any case, keep up the great job!
Sincerely,
Roberto

As a candidate for the board this year, I've been involved in discussions
with our international chapters about what we can do to better serve their
needs. The topic of insurance has come up more than once. At this point I
don't know exactly what the terms of our agreement with our current carrier
are, or how large the carrier is, but I imagine we will continue to reassess
our relationship with them and make improvements as we are able.

There are also concerns over the governance and financial arrangements of
international chapters. Some excellent plans have been suggested and if I'm
elected I want to work with our international chapters to come up with a
strategy that leaves no one in any doubt that the 'I' in IGDA stands for
International.
