Hi Bob,

The error is when I launch FIDE - in the opening screen I get a message 
in the FILEs section (the upper left window with the tiny IC in the 
corner) to _*Click here to select directory *_- I click, and I then get 
the run-time error. This is an XP, but it is an error in the computer 
setup as FIDE works fine on other XP machines, I probably broke some 
setting deep in the Registry. Note that this is from a fresh install of 
FIDE and the shortcut is setup correctly and the directory that it 
should open in does exist.

Perhaps a user permissions error? I will check into that now that I 
think of it..

Otherwise I think the simplest thing to do is to simply install XP on a 
fresh drive and then transfer over everything I care about. Running XP 
because it is an older computer and Windows, unlike OSX runs slower and 
slower with updated operating systems, and I need Windows for some of my 
old hardware that won't run on W7 or later. I should use DosBox (I do 
for Data I/O 29B) but this computer is handy (still has AT slots!) and 
it has been running for 15 or so years and why spend the time upgrading 
until something breaks. Like FIDE...

Not browsing with the XP machine so little risk of exposure to viruses 
and it is only on a few hours a week, and I did install even the latest 
MS patches for XP.

I'll probably soon end up updating the machine to W10 and see if 
everything else still works.

I just hate to retire hardware that is still working...hence TTL!
